The 2019 Artemis Women in Action Film Festival

Artemis Film Festival

Filmmakers Melanie Wise and Zac Baldwin recognized their love of female driven action movies early on in their lives. Then they took their passion a step further than moviemaking: honoring the women who create these globally beloved films by founding the Artemis Women in Action Film Festival (AWIAFF). From action heroes to female activists, AWIAFF's mission is to celebrate powerful women taking action onscreen. Women working in the production of narrative, documentary, and animated films, as well as women in music, are honored during this yearly festival. AWIAFF is produced in partnership with Cinefemme, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

A Festival Honoring Female Action and Empowerment Heroes

One thing's for certain: the founders of AWIAFF take great joy in celebrating women in powerful roles. Whether the performance is comedic or serious, these hard-working women deserve to be recognized and honored for the brilliant work they create. Each spring, AWIAFF showcases and celebrates those contributing to the female action and empowerment genres. Former honorees include Melissa McCarthy, Michelle Rodriguez, and Zoë Bell.

The Fifth Edition: What Has Changed?

For the fifth edition, AWIAFF now welcomes women composers of original scores to submit their work for consideration. Because female songwriters, bands, and conductors are essential to the world of filmmaking, AWIAFF opened up submissions to talented women in the music industry.

Submission Categories

How do you qualify for a AWIAFF nomination? AWIAFF welcomes films, music, and scripts featuring women either starring or co-starring as a physical action character or agent of social change. Works can be narrative, animated, or documentary.

Key Dates and Fees

Submissions close on January 15th, 2019, but are always welcome for future AWIAFF editions. Keep your eyes peeled for 2020 open submissions and fee details later on this year.

If you have submitted your project, expect a notification of acceptance March 1, 2019. The exhibition materials deadline is April 1, 2019.

Where to Submit Your Project

You can submit your piece directly through the Artemis website, FilmFreeway, and Withoutabox.
