And with some of the inspiration that saw Audi so often victorious at Le Mans, we at Santa Monica Audi can't think of any reason not to want one.

If you've ever wanted a race car, or at least to get as close as one not a Formula 1 Racer can, 2017 could be your year. Audi just released prototypical specs for a DTM racing version of what will soon be a high-efficiency V6 biturbo RS 5 performance coupe at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show. And if you think it sounds like any other coupe hitting the market with performance overtones, you might want to rethink. Or at least heed the recent press release-bespoken accolades of Head of Audi Motorsport Dieter Gass and Project Leader Stefan Gugger.

Audi's past DTM boasts two race seasons and ten victories, and it's this inspiration that's driving RS 5's development. The new DTM, Gugger claims, is even more aerodynamically progressive and extreme, with rear wheel arches trimmed for both efficiency and maximum downforce. A dual-flap rear wing with a Formula 1-style flattened top flap offers drag reduction as befits a true DTM racer with a more-than-500-horsepower, 4-liter V8 engine under its belt. It'll need them, as well as a boost from its modified air intake and cooling systems and modified front splitter, underfloor and rear diffuser specs, if it's going to cut through the thick of it while cutting that performance figure.

Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Audi Sport GmbH, lays out RS 5 in comparison, calling the latter a gran turismo of like aesthetics, efficiency, performance and everyday utility. We can surely see how. RS 5's specs are similar to the DMT's. It's got a dual-turbocharged 450-horsepower, 442.5 lb-ft-torque-capable engine, large, aerodynamic honeycomb-structure air inlets, headlight-located lateral air inlets and outlets, a wider, flatter Singleframe radiator grille, and quattro blisters atop widened wheel arches, a veritable alternative definition of "racer."
